In any matter involving millions of documents there are always instances where each party holds multiple copies of the same document or where parties hold different versions of a document. Equivio's product claims to be able to identify similar documents amongst the millions involved and allow lawyers to easily determine whether the documents are identical, or where they're not, to easily view the differences.
While Equivio state that they are "fully integrated" with litigation tools such as Summation, Ringtail and Concordance, their website appear to imply this involves exporting all of the documents, scanning them for duplicates then re-importing them into the case management system.
Equivio state that their product works with Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, PST, EML, MSG, ZIP, PDF, HTML, TXT, OCR-generated files so most text based documents should be covered.
It will be interesting to see how they progress in the local market, but on the face of it the product looks like it has a lot of potential.
