The big news for you Microsoft Virtual PC fans is the release of their new virtualization product, "Hyper-V", formally code name Viridian.
While Hyper-V will be a real hypervisor, it won't include the things you've come to expect from VMware ESX such as VMotion. Interestingly, Hyper-V will also add another $28 to the cost of your server OS, a nominal fee that can only be intended to appease anti-trust regulators.
It will be interesting to see how many firms actually implement the new hypervisor before Microsoft get around to releasing tools for live migration and other cool things. As one wag commenting at The Register noted:
"Well, that'll make me ditch my 5 SAN-attached VMware ESX hosts. After all, we've been using VMware ESX server in production for three and a half years. The whole "stable and working" thing is boring. I was thinking of using Xen, since that seemed somewhat iffy in some respects, but Hyper-V has a much cooler name and, more excitingly, is likely even less-well-tested than Xen! I can go back to the days of getting constant calls and pages from system monitoring tools. Hurray!"
