Smokeball released

E-mail Print PDF
Next week sees the launch of a new legal publishing initiative from the people behind LEAP Legal Software. The new website called “Smokeball” will offer legal precedents, commentary and practice guides on a pay per view or subscription basis.

Essentially, Smokeball is offering the precedents that LEAP have developed for their practice management product as a stand alone offering. The interesting part is that they will also be offering commentary and how to guides for the precedents.

The real beneficiary of this will be smaller firms who are occasionally required to establish a complex family trust of perform some other commercial transaction. While they could not justify the cost of subscribing to the relevant LexisNexis/Thomson/CCH service, being able to purchase a precedent with an associated how to guide would be worth the investment.

The model also works well for legal authors who can receive per purchase royalties at a much higher percentage than traditional publisher rates.

For any lawyers or legal nerds out there, the name comes from the famous case studied in first year law school “Carlill v. Carbolic Smoke Ball Company”, the case responsible for hundreds of legal end of year parties being so amusingly titled the “Carbolic Smoke Ball”. Lets just hope that no one claims that the website's promised are “mere puffery”.

Starting next week you will be able to find the full website here: http://www.smokeball.com.au/
